Mamamia's lifestyle writers share their favourite foundations for winter.

Foundation is one of the trickiest beauty products to get right. It's super personal. Your skin type, undertone, preferred finish, application method and even the weather all play a part in finding the right one.

What works like a dream in summer might cling to dry patches in winter. And just because a foundation is going viral on TikTok doesn't mean it's going to work for you.

That's why we often turn to our team members here at Mamamia for reliable beauty recommendations. These are the people who have tested, swatched and worn literally hundreds of foundations — so they know what's good (and what's not). And because we don't believe in gatekeeping beauty secrets, we love to share all of our favourite products.

So, from budget-friendly to splurge-worthy picks, please find the Mamamia Lifestyle team's holy grail foundations for winter below.

Top pick: MCoBeauty Miracle Hyaluronic Tinted Serum, $29.99.

"My skin has recently decided it's time for me to get dermatitis for the first time at the ripe old age of 36, so I am trying to stick to lightweight coverage and I love the MCoBeauty Miracle Hyaluronic Tinted Serum as it's a skincare/makeup hybrid. It gives you a dewy glow without sliding off your face by lunchtime."

Top pick: Morphe Lightform Extended Hydration Foundation, $33.

"I've been trying to find a foundation that actually covers my adult acne without making me look like I'm wearing a mask. This one from Morphe nails it. The coverage is unreal, but it still feels light and breathable — like I'm not wearing anything at all. It somehow manages to blur all my imperfections without clinging to dry patches or making me look shiny."

Top pick: Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint, $73.

"The Summer Fridays Skin Tint is my year-round MVP. It has an incredibly light consistency with a radiant finish that's neither dewy nor shimmery, leaving my skin still feeling like skin. And can we talk about the coverage? It has just enough to conceal redness and acne whilst balancing my skin tone, without looking heavy or like I'm wearing much at all. I've received more compliments on it than I can count. 11/10 recommend without hesitation."

Top pick: L'Oreal Paris True Match Liquid Foundation, $33.99.

"This has been a fail-safe choice for me for over five years now, and even when I stray away, I always find myself coming back to it.

It's a lovely thin formula that feels light on the skin and easily buildable coverage, making it perfect for any occasion, day or night. It has a kind of 'satin' finish that can be more dewy when layered over luminous products or more matte if you set it down. A chameleon, some could say!

I have found it to be long-lasting, comfortable and actually looks like 'skin'. Plus, the price point doesn't hurt.

I have this in a 'summer' and 'winter' shade and mix them together in the shoulder seasons.

If you're a Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk fan, then you'll love this drugstore option."

Top pick: Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation & Concealer Stick, $119.

"SO expensive, but the Westman Atelier Stick Foundation. I have psoriasis and very dry skin, and I find that all liquids, no matter how much skin prep, pill on me. A lot of other creams run super yellow/orange in warm tone shades, but Westman Atelier is the perfect match, super easy to blend in a couple of seconds with a beauty blender, and doesn't flake on my psoriasis patches."

Top pick: Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream, $15.50 (usually $25).

"Unfortunately, I'm just not a foundation girl. No matter how 'lightweight' it claims to be, foundation always ends up feeling heavy and congesting on my very sensitive skin.

That's why I've always leaned towards tinted moisturisers or BB creams, because they give me just enough coverage and usually come with added skincare benefits.

My current fave is the Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream.

It's basically a budget-friendly dupe for the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream, which I used religiously for over 10 years — but the Missha version will only set you back $15.50, compared to $82. A literal steal.

The formula is packed with hyaluronic acid, peptides, collagen and ceramides, so it hydrates, soothes and gives your skin that subtle glow — think dewy, glass-like skin without the grease.

It's a bit thicker than your average BB cream, which means it actually covers discolouration and uneven tone. In saying this, it still manages to look natural and lightweight — perfect for that effortless, no-makeup makeup look."
