'It's official. I just found a holiday spot that rivals Byron (without the price tag).'

If there's one thing that defines my childhood, it's the nostalgic smell of sunscreen and snags sizzling on barbecues at holiday parks.

My dad's always been that guy — the one who's obsessed with camping gear and who's always planning the next adventure. Over the years, he's cycled through caravans, rooftop tents, swags, regular tents… you name it, he's tried it.

But now that I've grown up, flown the nest and joined the ranks of the busy (and of course, very important) adults, I don't get to spend as much time with my family anymore.

So we figured, why not plan another family trip back to our favourite holiday spot? It's one of those places that never lets us down — good vibes, good memories and loads of family activities to bond over.

I'm talking about the South Coast of NSW, specifically Kiama. The place where you can pat a stranger's dog without the weird looks and where talking about the weather is basically a local sport.

Here's why I'll continue to rave about Kiama to anyone who'll listen.

The beachfront accommodation.

When we visit, we always stay at one place: BIG4 Easts Beach Holiday Park, Kiama. It's in a prime beachfront location and offers a range of accommodation options, including beach retreats and cabins, as well as powered sites to suit all campers and group sizes.

But the best part? It won't cost you a fortune — the accommodation is super budget-friendly and honestly, the bang for your buck is next level.

Alright, I'll say it — it gives Byron a run for its money, minus the crowds, the eight-hour drive and the eye-watering prices.

The resort-style feel.

The quality of the facilities (and the accommodation) at BIG4 Holiday Parks — not just in Kiama, but all over Australia — never fails to surprise and impress me. It feels like a proper resort and nothing like what I remembered from the holiday parks when I was younger.

We lounged by the heated pool and the large main pool which has two lap lanes and a disability access ramp, making it super easy to get in and out.

And for the kids? Well. There's an Aqua Adventure Park where they can have the time of their lives. There are multi-level platforms, two water slides and a giant tipping bucket. There's even a shaded water zone designed especially for babies and toddlers.

Nothing says "BIG4 holiday" like the jumping pillow. It's an absolute classic. Kids love it. Adults (i.e. me) also love it. My 10-year-old sister and I have spent actual hours bouncing around — it's the ultimate low-key bonding activity. No age limit on fun here.

There's also a games room for the kids, so no need for them to be glued to their devices. Seriously, just leave them at home. (Not the kids — the devices.)

There's also a modern, clean camp kitchen and BBQ area — perfect for cooking up dinner and making the neighbours a little envious.

Seriously though, there's something for everyone, whether you've got little kids, teens or it's just the adults tagging along.

Location, location, location.

When I'm in Kiama, I like to pretend I'm a local.

With multiple beaches to choose from — Easts Beach, Kendalls, Surf Beach and a little further north, Bombo — it's the perfect spot for beach-hopping.

The water is so blue, it might just make Byron Bay jealous. You can swim, snorkel, bodyboard or just float and relax. It's got that perfect Aussie beach vibe: soft sand, gentle waves and zero stress.

One of my favourite things to do in the area is the Kiama Blowhole to Loves Bay walk. It's packed with gorgeous views of the South Coast beaches and headlands. The scenery is unreal — especially looking back towards Kiama and the lighthouse. The walk is about six kilometres and takes around an hour and a half.

Whenever I'm in town, I always check if the local markets are on. You'll find everything from locally designed clothing and jewellery to handcrafted gifts, plus plenty of coffee and food stalls to wander through.

And when it comes to food, you're sorted — there are loads of cafes in town and plenty of spots to picnic (beach or park, take your pick) if you're in the mood for a slow morning. Later on, there's no shortage of restaurants and cute little bars to check out — all within a 10-minute drive.
