Best and Worst of the week

Rick writes: Ahoy! The week has been and gone and you know what that means? Time to look back at what we’ve done, where we’ve been and why it may be necessary to hold our eyes open with toothpicks.

On Mamamia this week we looked at our friends and our frenemies and we discussed our sex lives. As you do. In fact we found out some really interesting things about semen!

We shared stories about what we’ve done for love and when we hit our stride, We even exchanged gifting etiquette advice.

We pored through some fabulous frocks all seen at the  Cannes film festival and we took a moment to honour the fact that Katy Perry is in town.

We read with interest of Mia’s meeting a woman on a plane, a woman who happened to be wearing a full niqab and we pondered the ultimate surrogacy dilemma.  We tried to understand the nuts and bolts of  the Budget,and what it takes to be rich in 2011. We debated the latest ‘solution’ to  asylum seekers and we shuddered at the the abominable practice of raping lesbians in South Africa.

With Masterchef beginning in earnest on our TV screens our minds eventually turned to food. Now that we have had a look at the best and best of Mamamia for the week let’s get on to sharing our own bests and worsts… I’ll start.

I’ve had a slightly bizarre week. It was kind of like an MC Escher drawing of my life.

Bests: Last Friday I was lucky enough to attend the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Mother’s Day Lunch at The Ivy Room. It was hosted by Julie McCrossin and featured guests such as Sarah-Jane Clarke (from sass & bide) and Cate Blanchett, the co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company.

They were warm, intelligent guests who spoke about the UN’s own birthing kits that, for $3 a pop, save mums and babies. They also launched the new campaign to purchase as many of these as they can. What a cause.

That same night I also managed (through some dent of sheer audacity) to make it on to the red carpet for the Premiere of Water for Elephants. One of the main reasons I went was to make my 16-year-old sister insanely jealous: Robert Pattinson was there. I managed to overtake him on the red carpet. I don’t think he realised it was a race but I totally won. That’s the only picture I have of the occasion. You can’t see it, but I’d come straight from work so I think I became the first person in the world to walk the red carpet with a laptop bag. And a really big book which I managed to hide in my friend’s handbag. Oh yeah, I’m so classy. Oh, great film too. I may or may not have cried a little.

I have too many bests. I was also lucky enough to land a phone interview with Ingrid Betancourt who was taken hostage for 6.5 years in the Colombian jungle. Had to do it at 5am but it was beyond worth it. Stay tuned for the story, it should be up on Friday if our plans hold together!

Worst? I’m the owner of a major sleep deficit. And I’m really not used to how cold it is here. Trust Sydney to have its coldest May day since 1997 when I move from Queensland. Yeah, thanks a lot!
