Skincare is an ever-evolving space. Every month, week, day or even hour(!), there seems to be a new formula, ingredient or brand receiving all the hype on socials.

But amongst all these changes, there's one ingredient that has continued to maintain its gold standard. Retinol.

Yes, while some only know it as the ingredient that comes with the dreaded "skin purging," most who have pushed through this phase emerge with some of the best skin of their lives.

What is retinol?

Ok, just as a recap: Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is widely regarded as the gold standard in skincare, and for good reason. It tackles a range of concerns, including fine lines, uneven texture, dullness, acne and loss of firmness.

It essentially works by accelerating your skin's natural cell turnover, encouraging old, damaged cells to shed and fresh, healthy ones to take their place. The result is clearer pores, smoother skin and a brighter, more youthful complexion.

And if that wasn't enough, retinol is one of the only ingredients proven to stimulate collagen, which is the protein that keeps skin firm, elastic and slows visible signs of ageing.

Now, the only real downside of retinol (aside from the initial purging phase) is that there are so many "highly recommended," "best-selling," "skin-transformative," "game-changing" formulas hyped online, many of which can also leave a serious dent in your wallet.

But the good news is we've found solutions for both these problems. Well, correction, one particular dermatologist we absolutely admire, Dr Neera Nathan, presented us with the solutions.

The Harvard-trained dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon recently shared an Instagram post we'd been waiting for over on Instagram, highlighting her top picks for affordable retinol.

How to use retinol in your routine.

Test patch: Dab a tiny amount on your forearm or behind your ear, wait 12–24 hours, and watch for redness, itching or burning. If there's no reaction, slowly work it into your routine. If irritation occurs, wash it off and skip it.

Start slow: Begin with 1–2 nights a week, gradually increasing frequency as your skin builds tolerance.

Apply at night: Retinol makes your skin photosensitive, so always use it in your evening routine.

Pea-sized amount: Remember, less is more! Dab a pea-sized amount for your entire face.

Layer wisely: Apply on clean, dry skin, and follow with a hydrating moisturiser to minimise irritation. You can also try the 'sandwich technique', where you apply moisturiser before and after your retinol layer.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable: Daily SPF is essential, even on cloudy days or those spent indoors.

Retinol tips.

Purging is normal! Don't panic: It's normal for breakouts to flare initially as your skin renews. So just stick with it!

Be careful mixing potions: Avoid using strong acids (like AHAs and BHAs) on the same night to reduce irritation.

Patience pays off: FYI, visible improvements in texture, fine lines and brightness can take 6–12 weeks.

Hydrate. Hydrate, hydrate: Even if your retinol serum is lightweight, always follow with hydration to protect the skin barrier.

Consistency beats intensity: Regular, gentle use trumps occasional heavy application.
