Striking blue courts. Aperol Spritzes. A chorus of… grunting.

In case you missed it, the 2026 Australian Open kicked off this week in Melbourne. It's that time of year when every man, woman and child in Australia finds themselves obsessed with the tennis.

Yes, the sport (and the ball kid antics!). But also, the fashion.

Figuring out what to wear to the tennis is a conundrum. You're navigating a tennis dress code (it's basically smart casual) and 30+ degree weather, as well as hours on your feet and very little shade.

From halter tops and vest suit sets to a specific style of sunnies, I took notes on what cool women were wearing around the Australian Open.

Whether you're going to the Aus Open is neither here nor there; you could wear any of these summer trends to your next long lunch, summer wedding or to the office.

Keep scrolling for a tennis fashion mood board that doubles as a summer styling manual, plus where to shop all the looks.

So it looks like we're all getting our shoulders out!

I saw all sorts of halter tops and halter dresses — more traditional halter-neck pieces, to modern halter-adjacent silhouettes.

Polka dots have been trending since mid-2025, but if the sheer number of polka dot outfits I saw at the tennis is anything to go by, they'll stick around for at least another season.

From teeny tiny monochrome polka dots to larger circles in shades of blue, yellow and chocolate brown, you couldn't walk a few metres without seeing a woman in a cool polka dot dress or set.

Mamamia's contributing fashion editor Tamara Holland says shield sunnies are the sunglasses trend of 2026.

I saw plenty of these oversized retro sunglasses with yellow or golden-tinted lenses. On the other hand, lots of women were styling smaller frames with delicate gold or silver hardware, or embellishment on the arms of the sunglasses.

4. Matching sets.

Matching sets will never not be in style, especially in spring and summer. They're the easiest outfit to throw on when you want to look 'put together', but need something unfussy and comfortable.

They don't even actually have to be matching… two pieces in a similar material and tone have the same effect!

There were many a printed matching set at the Australian Open — think stripes, gingham sets and polka dots — but I also saw a lot of women wearing linen suits and vest suiting, as well as tonal sets in white, cream, khaki, chocolate brown and grey.

Makes sense, as a lot of people go to the tennis straight from the office!

This mini dress silhouette was everywhere. Oh, and mini skirts, too.

The polished, classic cut of these mini dresses and skirts are elevated enough for the tennis (it is a bit of an elitist sport, after all!), but you'll find them in trending colours and patterns.

I have added so many polka dot mini dresses to my cart.

6. Bermuda shorts and belts.

Another 2025 trend here to stay; Bermuda shorts really were made for the tennis.

Women wore tailored suit-style Bermuda shorts in neutral shades of cream, white, black and chocolate brown, paired with a classic gold hardware belt and a light knit singlet, or halter top. Night session girlies added a blazer.

7. Elevated thongs.

While some wore Adidas or New Balance sneakers, hot Melbourne weather calls for getting the dogs out.

Almost everyone stylish I spied was wearing some sort of elevated thong: flat-soled or chunky leather thongs, 'puffy' thongs, kitten heel thongs or good old Havaianas or Archies thongs.
