'When I asked a hairstylist for a bob, his response surprised me.'

A thing you need to know about me: I'm wildly inconsistent with haircuts. Mostly because I'm lazy. And too poor to drop $300 every time I need a trim.

My hair routine is predictably cyclical: chop it all off, wait for a year-and-a-half to grow it out, hate it, then chop it all off again. It's an endless cycle of being stuck with a hairstyle I don't really love.

After nearly two years since my last post-wedding chop, my hair had become long, fluffy, and shapeless. So when I was offered a haircut at Sydney's newly renovated Headcase Hair with master stylist John Pulitano, I jumped at the chance. (Listen, sometimes the universe just knows when you're desperate).

Pulitano is launching a new layering technique called the 'Texture Edit', and full transparency — this haircut costs $750.

Yes. I'll give you a moment.

Instead of the usual "what are we doing today?" question, Pulitano took a consultation approach: asking about my scalp health, styling routine, and what I liked and didn't like about my hair. Fancy, right?

When I suggested a blunt lob, he said… no. His reasons were practical (and a little too real).

For starters, he said the lob length I described would "likely fall in an awkward A-line shape", potentially making my hair look wide and boofy at the ends — which was everything I just told him I didn't like about my current hairstyle.

And look, as a pregnant woman, I feel like I don't want a cut that is going to make me look wider. I really don't.

"It's an awkward length for your hair type," Pulitano said.

Well, should I go shorter? Like, bob short?

"If I cut it shorter, above the shoulders into a bob, it's just going to flip out at the ends," he said, noting the curl in my hair will also get stronger. He went on to explain that while it'll look great when I leave the salon, it would be tricky for me to style to my liking once I get home. Also, with pregnancy potentially making hair fluffier, styling time would increase. Which doesn't sound good when you throw a new baby into the mix.

"It's a wow for a minute and then it'll be high commitment for you. You'd automatically just start to grow it back out."

As I just discussed with Pulitano, hairstyling is not my strong feat. I usually leave myself about seven minutes to style my hair in the morning and it either consists of a rough blow-dry brush situation or tying my hair in a loose low bun before pulling it out for some 'undone' waves.

His solution? Soft layers with strategic shaping at the front and long layers at the back to manage thickness and maintain easy styling. "Even with just a quick blow-dry brush, you'll still look great in the morning with this length," he assured me.

But here's where things got even more interesting.

During our consultation, I mentioned using Olaplex regularly. Pulitano advised me to stop immediately — he told me my hair had too much protein and needed hydration instead. Apparently, while bond-building treatments are great for colour-damaged hair, they weren't right for my hair type.

OH.

The result wasn't a dramatic transformation, but my hair felt lighter, had more shape, and most importantly — I could actually recreate the style at home. The maintenance plan is simple: touch-up appointments every few months to maintain the shape.

"You can blow dry it with your blow dry brush and pop it up in your loose bun and — done!" Pulitano said.

And you guys, he wasn't lying.

But look, is a $750 haircut necessary for everyone? Definitely not. But for someone breaking out of a two-year hair rut and heading into motherhood, investing in a cut that's both stylish and manageable seemed like a smart move.
