Chaotic hosts, surprising snubs and electrifying performances: The biggest moments from the 2024 ARIAs.

Hello, hey, hi! Gather around, humble readers, for it is Australian music's big night to look back at the year that was: it's the 2024 ARIA Awards, baby!

This year's ARIAs were held at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, and screened live on Stan and YouTube before airing on Channel 9.

Nova's Tim Blackwell was the hostess with the mostest with Bridget Hustwaite and (rather unhinged) Rhys Nicholson presenting backstage.

Australia's largest music industry awards cover 29 categories. The 2024 nominations were led by indie rock duo Royel Otis followed by Dom Dolla, Kylie Minogue and Angie McMahon.

Viewers were blessed with performances by The Kid LAROI (more on that later), Jessica Mauboy, Amy Shark, Angie McMahon, Ava Max and Kane Brown, along with Missy Higgins who performed a medley of her biggest hits as she was inducted into the ARIAs Hall of Fame.

The fashion was in fine form with a delightful mix of metallic and dramatic looks.

But enough yapping from me, let's jump into all the biggest and wildest moments.

Troye Sivan wore a very sensible shirt on the red carpet.

I love Troye Sivan with my whole heart but he picked possibly the least Troye Sivan-esque outfit for the ARIAs.

This grey ensemble is the antidote to brat summer. It looks like he's heading to his year 12 formal.

But never fear, he changed into a bedazzled harness for the show.

Always keeping us on our toes, Troye!

The Wiggles definitely picked different dress codes.

I'm a huge fan of The Wiggles dressing for completely different functions.

Shoutout to the Tree of Wisdom, whose commitment to dressing as a confused tree continues to thrill me.

Kylie Minogue was a no show.

Despite being nominated for several awards, the princess of pop didn't show up to the ARIAs, but she did deliver a video message.

Rhys Nicholson was as chaotic as ever.

The comedian was in fine form in his role as co-presenter. He said classical music was the ADHD of music and said that "something is wrong with that baby" when the jazz group Mildlife was holding a dog.

When Sophie Hutchings collected her ARIA, Rhys erratically shouted at her, "It's heavy and sharp!" Incredible.

Angie McMahon and Troy Cassar-Daley called out ageism in the music industry.

The award for Best Independent Release was given to Angie McMahon for her album, Light, Dark, Light Again. In her speech, she spoke about ageism in the industry.

"I turned 30 this year and I used to be afraid of reaching this age, I thought that you expire in the music industry," she said.

"I don't believe we expire when we reach a certain age."

Troy Cassar-Daley picked up the Best Country Album for Between The Fires and he echoed her statements.

"Old fellas can still get these," he added. "You don't reach your use by date at 30."

Ava Max brought some girly pop to the ARIAs.

The US popstar brought the house down with a sexy performance of 'Kings & Queens' before jumping into her massive hit 'Sweet But Psycho' and ending on her new bop, 'Forever Young'.

She was surrounded by dancers in leather jackets and white tees as she brought the wow-factor to the awards.

Emily Wurramara gave an iconic speech as she collected a huge award.

Wearing a stunning silver gown, Emily Wurramara picked up the award for Best Adult Contemporary Album for Nara which she sang in her traditional Anindilyakwa language.

"I can't swear, ay?" she began.

"To all the mob in the room, your ancestors are watching and they're so proud."

She later told Rhys and Bridget that the album was "the proudest thing she ever achieved".

The Kid LAROI performed… sort of!

The iconic Aussie performed his mega-hit 'GIRLS', but while it was teased he would be at the ARIAs, it was a pre-recorded performance.

Either way, he killed it! He even included an ethereal set of 'Nights Like This' and it was incredible.

Jessica Mauboy and 3% sent shivers down spines.

3% and Jessica Mauboy came together for their stunning song 'Won't Stop', and it was a powerhouse performance.

The Presets then came out for the collaboration 'OUR PEOPLE'. 3% brought out traditional First Nation dancers, and there wasn't a dry eye in sight.

Troye Sivan gave his mum a shoutout when he won.

The award for Best Pop Release went to Troye Sivan for 'Something to Give Each Other'.

Accepting the award, Troye spoke about his mother, recalling how she had reminded him that he was singing AQUA's 'Barbie Girl' when he was three.

"I knew I was gay [laughs] and I knew I loved pop music," he said.

He also won Best Solo Artist and got choked up when he thanked his parents.

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers thanked an unexpected inspiration.

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers took home the Michael Gudeinski Breakthrough Artist award for their record, I Love You.

"We started the band when we were 15 after watching School of Rock at a sleepover," Neve Van Boxsel said.

"Thank you to our parents, and Jack Black."

I also thank Jack Black in all my speeches, so that tracks!

Tkay Maidza made us all sob.

Tkay Maidza scored the gong for Best Soul/R&B Release for Sweet Justice, and as soon as she hit the stage, Tkay couldn't contain her emotions.

"Thank you so much to my parents for being here and raising me. Thank you for believing in me," she said between sobs.

"Music is my escape… thank you to Australia for accepting me."

I'm feeling emotions!!!

Missy Higgins sobbed on stage.

Missy Higgins won Best Australian Live Act for her The Second Act tour. She brought her band on stage and praised them for the support they offered her.

"I love these guys so much, they're my family they are what have got me through the last year of my life," she said.

"The new album is the rawest most vulnerable thing I've put out there. I was in tears at the beginning of this tour because I didn't know how I was going to sing these songs every night.

"If you've just turned 40 and been through a divorce I highly recommend going out on the road."

Missy Higgins was inducted into the ARIAs Hall of Fame (about time).

Magda Subanski gave Missy Higgins the big award with stars like Paul Kelly, Amy Shark, Kasey Chambers, Dan Sultan, G Flip and Ben Lee giving tributes.

Missy gave a special shoutout to her champion from day one: her mother. "It's well known to this day that you don't f**k with Marg Higgins," she said.

The 'Scar' singer called out how much international music has dominated the ARIA charts recently, in contrast to her rise in the '00s when Australian music was booming.

"We're seeing less and less of our own songs on our own charts," she said.

"We need to demand that local content be prioritised here. We cannot lose Australian stories."

Missy ended the show with some of her most beloved tunes with a bunch of her muso mates.

Who got Album of the Year? Let's find out!

Troye Sivan continued his sweep of the ARIAs taking home the big award which he was not prepared for.

"Nooo. What the hell! I don't have anything to say. I said it all before," he stressfully declared.

Out of sheer panic, Troye spoke about how when he was writing the album, he was recovering from a breakup. "I would just go out and hook up with random people," he joked.

The camera flashed to his mother, as she covered her ears. Huge mood, mother.

Sivan then spoke about how he wrote the album about his one-night stand. "I feel like he's going to get a restraining order against me," he joked afterwards.

An icon.

If this isn't the way the night SHOULD end, I don't know what is!
