Ayo Edebiri is finally entering her rom-com era.

The rom-com gods have finally answered our collective prayers.

After watching Ayo Edebiri absolutely slay in dramatic and comedic roles, where she's showcased her sizzling chemistry with various co-stars, Apple TV+ is finally giving us what we've been desperately craving: Ayo Edebiri in a full-blown romantic comedy series.

Yes, we've seen her cook up a storm (and tension) in The Bear. We've watched her comedic brilliance in Bottoms. We've even seen her voice acting versatility in Inside Out 2. But THIS? This is different. This is Ayo in her rom-com era, and honestly, it's about bloody time.

What is Prodigies about?

Prodigies isn't your typical will-they-won't-they love story. The seven-episode series follows Didi and Ren, two former child prodigies who've been together for a decade. Now in their early 30s, they're facing the ultimate relationship existential crisis.

Remember how we're all told exceptional children will grow up to change the world? Well, Didi and Ren are wondering if their perfectly ordinary adult lives measure up to the extraordinary potential everyone saw in them as kids. And naturally, they're applying that same scrutiny to their relationship.

The series flips the traditional rom-com formula on its head. As Apple TV+ describes it, Prodigies challenges "the fallacy at the heart of romantic storytelling — that the tale is over when the heroes get together. In life, surely, that is just the beginning?"

It's the "what happens after happily ever after" story we didn't know we needed, diving into how individual dreams and ambitions can both complement and complicate a long-term relationship.

Who is the cast of Prodigies?

First up, we have Emmy-winner Ayo Edebiri as Didi. Unless you've been living under a rock, you know Edebiri from her role as Sydney in The Bear, which earned her critical acclaim and a massive fanbase. She's also appeared in Bottoms, Theater Camp, and recently starred in the A24 thriller Opus opposite John Malkovich.

Starring opposite her is Will Sharpe as Ren.

Sharpe is perhaps best known to audiences as Ethan Spiller from the second season of The White Lotus, where he delivered a performance equal parts awkward and captivating. His other credits include Flowers, Giri/Haji, and the recent film A Real Pain.

But here's the kicker — Sharpe isn't just starring in the show. He created it, wrote it, and is directing it too. Meanwhile, Edebiri is flexing her behind-the-camera muscles as an executive producer. Talk about a power duo.

When is Prodigies coming out?

Here's the only downside to this otherwise perfect news — Apple TV+ hasn't announced an official release date yet. The series has been confirmed as a seven-episode run, but we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out exactly when we can watch these two talented performers bring their romance to life.

Given the calibre of talent involved both in front of and behind the camera, Prodigies promises to be a standout addition to Apple TV+'s already impressive lineup of original content. And with Edebiri's star continuing to rise after her Emmy win and Sharpe's growing reputation as a multifaceted creator, this series couldn't come at a better time.
