It’s time to talk about THAT uncomfortable Blake Lively scene in Another Simple Favour.

A disturbing scene in Another Simple Favour has cast an unsettling shadow over the sequel.

Directed by Paul Feig, Another Simple Favour reunites Anna Kendrick as Stephanie Smothers and Blake Lively as Emily Nelson, this time on the glamorous Italian island of Capri, Italy.

The plot follows Stephanie, now a true-crime novelist, as she's invited to serve as maid of honour at Emily's opulent wedding to mob heir Dante (Michele Morrone).

Warning: This article contains a major spoiler for the movie aka go ahead with caution!

The wedding ends in murder (surprise!), but it's a disturbing twist involving Emily's long-lost triplet, Charity, that brings a shift in tone that's straight-up uncomfortable to watch.

What happens in the incest scene in Another Simple Favour?

The film's most shocking moment involves a scene that has been widely described as an "incest" or "twincest" encounter.

Around halfway into the film, it is revealed that Emily's supposed stillborn triplet, Charity (also played by Blake Lively), is actually alive. Charity was raised in seclusion by their abusive aunt, leading to her mental instability and growing obsession with Emily.

After drugging Emily, Charity confesses to killing Emily's ex-husband and new fiancé, declaring that they "only need each other".

While Emily is paralysed, Charity then kisses and seemingly sexually assaults her, whispering, "I'm only here to make you feel good. So good. Because it makes me feel good. Do you want what I want? Blink if that's alright."

The camera cuts away, leaving it ambiguous what Charity actually did to Emily, who was incapacitated throughout the scene.

This moment is presented as a flashback and shows Emily's frightened facial expression, reflecting her inability to consent.

This scene would be disturbing enough on its own, but the misplaced comedic tone it's delivered with makes it all the more dark. Viewers have flagged the film's tone — which oscillates between dark comedy and thriller — struggles to balance the gravity of the subject matter.

The juxtaposition of this traumatic event in a black comedy has led to criticism that the scene crosses a line, making it feel exploitative rather than serving a meaningful narrative purpose.

It's played off as a punchline, as after Emily relays the incident to Stephanie, she jokes that she's a "Sisterf**ker!" — a callback to a revelation in the first film that Stephanie had slept with (and possibly had a child with) her brother. This led to Emily repeatedly referring to Stephanie as a "Brotherf**ker!"

The incest scene follows other incest arcs being either explored or alluded to in HBO's The White Lotus this year and Monsters: The Menendez Brothers on Netflix in 2024. It's all a bit much, hey.

I get that A Simple Favour is all about pushing boundaries with dark humour, but the creepy third triplet story could have been explored with dialogue or a kiss, rather than full-blown sexual assault delivered with the seriousness of a MILF joke.

Anyways, it's all rather icky and unnecessary from an otherwise fun and harmless film like Another Simple Favour. In a sequel stuffed with multiple story arcs and new characters, many fans would agree they could have done without the unwelcome pivot to non-consensual twincest. Keep it!
