When Henry Golding was asked to do Another Simple Favor, he agreed on one condition.

Get ready for more mystery, plot twists and outrageous fashion as Another Simple Favor finally hits Prime Video this week.

The original A Simple Favor from 2018 was a surprise hit, becoming a box office smash and winning fans with its dark humour, sharp twists, and the infectious ying-yang chemistry between Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.

Both stars return for the sequel, Another Simple Favor, alongside Henry Golding and a cast that now includes Michele Morrone, Elizabeth Perkins and Allison Janney.

Directed again by Paul Feig, the sequel transports the messy gang to Capri in Italy, where Emily (Lively), newly released from prison, invites Stephanie (Kendrick) to be her maid of honour at her lavish Italiano wedding.

When a murder disrupts the festivities, Emily and Stephanie must overcome their differences to escape in a wild, twist-filled sequel that leans into the campy, over-the-top fun fans loved in the original.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Feig and Golding ahead of the film's premiere. In the sequel, Henry's character Sean is much darker, as he spends most of his scenes in a vicious war of words with his now-ex-wife, Emily (Lively), or just being, well… day drunk.

Sean's tone shift between the original and the sequel was a change that the actor welcomed.

"It was so much fun. That was one of the prerequisites of stepping back in his shoes… I'd love to come back, but Sean was a bit of a punching bag in the first movie," he said.

"I want him to have some sort of drunken superpower [laughs]. And this bravado that's brought on by years of being punished and booze… we came up with who he is now, and it was just so much fun to be able to hit back at the barbs and the jests, with something that Sean would come up with.

"Audiences will be very surprised at the new Sean."

It was an experience that the British actor relished in, as the first film was one of the projects that gave him his big break.

"A Simple Favor was the second film that I had ever done straight off of Crazy Rich Asians," he said. "Coming back and revisiting the set, I am a totally different sort of actor and person… I could actually enjoy the process rather than freaking out on set."

This renewed confidence is something that Henry's co-stars felt on set, recalled the director.

"The first day we shot with everybody, Blake and Anna were like, 'Who's that? That's not the Hen we remember'," Feig recalled.

"He comes in with all this attitude as the character and it was so much fun. And yet he's still the same sweet gentleman."

Sitting with Feig (well, virtually), I had to ask why the director chose to break his 'no sequels' rule for this film. "I have no morals whatsoever. I have no self-control," Feig joked.

"No, A Simple Favour is one of my favorite movies I've done because I love these characters so much, and it just felt like there was a chance to do something new with them."

The pleasure of the filming experience made Feig want to do it all over again.

"We had such a good time on the first one back in 2018 or 2017 whenever we shot it, and good experiences stick with you as a director, because sometimes they're not as much fun," he said.

"I love the characters so much and the interaction we had and it just felt like everybody has slipped right back into their characters, even if the characters are slightly modified."

Feig credits the popularity of the movie to it getting a second life on streaming platforms during COVID lockdowns.

"The movie really took off during the pandemic and found a whole new audience in addition to the people who liked it the first time. We just had this idea of like, I've always wanted to do something in Capri," he said.

The director was inspired by an over-the-top wedding in Capri between style icon Giovanna Battaglia and Swedish realtor Oscar Engelbert. "There was a famous wedding that took place there that Giovanna Battaglia — who's the fashion editor of Vogue Paris — got married to this really rich guy there, and I wanted to do something like that wedding."

With a location in sight, Feig just had to 'figure out' what ridiculous reason would bring his beloved characters to Capri. "We take Stephanie, Emily and Sean, and send them off to this beautiful island and have lots of twists and turns and fashion and fun."

And the director delivered: Another Simple Favor is all these things, and a lot more!
