How can you achieve work life balance? Ali Wong has a simple, four word answer.

“How do you achieve work life balance?”

For stand-up comedian Ali Wong, it’s a question she hears time and time again.

It’s no surprise, however, given Wong’s known for being a “mum comedian”.

Ali Wong’s debut 2016 Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra earned her a fanbase of mothers worldwide.

In Baby Cobra, a very pregnant Wong, who was in her third trimester at the time, took to the stage to deliver an hour of jokes on the double standards of parenting

“I can’t tell you how many selfies I’ve gotten asked for at the gynecologist and pediatrician office,” she told The New York Times. “I should sell tickets there.”

Last month, Wong released her second Netflix comedy special Hard Knock Wife.

Pregnant once again, Wong’s Hard Knock Wife dug deep into childbirth, marriage, motherhood and the age-old debate of work life balance.

Her answer on how she achieves a work life balance is simple.

“I have a nanny,” Wong says in Hard Knock Wife.

“That’s it.”

Wong also spoke about how it infuriates her that so many celebrities don’t acknowledge having a nanny.

“It’s unfair to the hard-core stay-at-home moms to pretend you’re able to have an amazing body by chasing around your kids,” Wong told The New York Times.

“I think one of the hardest things to talk about as a comic is having money because it’s so unrelatable. But this is such a big part of my life,” she added.

As a successful working mother, Wong often receives comments about being the main breadwinner in the family.

“I’m always asked how my husband is feeling about my success with a note of concern,” Wong told The New York Times.

“He feels great. It’s not hard to feel good about your spouse making money.”

It’s not the first time Ali Wong has spoken out about parenting double standards and the dreaded work life balance question.

Back in 2016, at New York label Opening Ceremony’s New York Fashion Week Show, Ali was asked the age-old question.

“How do I balance family and career? People ask me that all the time,” Ali told the fashion show’s host, actor Fred Armisen.

“Men never get asked that question because, they don’t. They just ignore the child and that’s perfect, socially acceptable.”

“My husband occasionally changes diapers, and people, they can’t believe it,” she added.

Speaking of her answer to achieving a work life balance, Ali spoke about how she has a nanny.

“I work my ass off to pay for the nanny. She’s $3,000 a month so I gotta hustle. My husband and I, we both got to work very hard to not take care of our child ourselves.”
