The calculated, clever motive for someone like Ali Oetjen going on The Bachelorette.

Moments after Sam proposed to Tara on Bachelor in Paradise, a voice-over announced Ali Oetjen was “giving love another chance” as our next Bachelorette.

There was little context more than her relationship with Grant – also known as the man she had, some 15 minutes earlier, been professing her deep and undying love for – was over.

Over on The Bachelorette Australia’s official Instagram page, fans were given the smallest of snapshots as to why it may have broken down:

“After appearing on Bachelor In Paradise, unfortunately, distance proved too big a hurdle for Ali & Grant.

“Eager to make it third time lucky in love, Ali is ready to call the shots.”

Ali, in the few hours since the announcement was made, has been open about the fact she is 32, looking for love and ready to start a family. And while there’s little doubt that’s the case – in fact, her former castmates concur she is very much on the look out for love – all you have to do is glance at the life and times of former Bachelor and Bachelorettes to concur that love isn’t the sole motivator of a willing reality star.

We debrief on all things Bachelor in Paradise on our recap podcast. Post continues after.

In the years since Tim Robards went on the show, he launched The Robards Method, a health and wellness platform. Sam Wood has created 28 by Sam Wood to compliment his time running a Melbourne gym. Sam Frost had roles on radio on TV, and Sophie Monk re-launched her Aussie TV career with Love Island. Even Matty J, in fact, is getting some Channel 10 airtime via occasional cameos on The Living Room.

If you’re after a career in the health and fitness industry or one in the media, there’s little doubt: Using the Bachelor or Bachelorette as the Bachelor or Bachelorette to leverage your career works. We know this, because in a digital realm dominated by Instagram ads and one where your commercial worth is all but equated to the size of your social media following, Bachelor and Bachelorettes are good business. Their reputations are often clean, because Warner Brothers doesn’t have a show if its brightest stars aren’t adored at large by the public.

Of course, you can call me a cynic. I’d agree, then raise you Ali Oetjen’s ‘Eight-week healthy lifestyle program’. An e-book.

“Coming soon.”
