Abominable is the awe-inspiring new movie families will want to see these school holidays.

A true family movie should serve up a story of love, adventure and beating the odds, with an adorable lead creature taking us through that magical journey.

Laughs are important too. And if you’re taking your kids out to the movies these school holidays, you want all of the above, no doubt.

These ingredients come together in the new film Abominable, the latest big-screen animated must-see movie from the team that brought us the How To Train Your Dragon franchise.

Abominable is a visually stunning adventure that tells the story of a teenage girl named Yi (voiced by Chloe Bennet), a rather solitary tomboy figure whose main obsession is working diligently at a number of little odd jobs so she can save up for her dream trip across China, a trip she had been planning to take with her father before he passed away.

One night, Yi is left in shock and awe when she discovers a young yeti hiding out on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai.

Together with her neighbours and friends Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), the trio names their new yeti friend Everest.

Since Everest is desperate to escape corporate zoophile Burnish (Eddie Izzard), who captured and transported him to Shanghai to be part of his private collection, Yi, Jin and Peng set out on an epic journey together to reunite the magical creature with his parents in the Himalayas.

For those of you not quite up to date on your yeti (or Abominable Snowman, as they are sometimes referred to) information, they are an important figure in Asian folklore and mythology and frankly, it’s about time these majestic ape-like creatures were given their time in the pop-culture spotlight.

In true DreamWorks style, there’s extra special care taken with the animation. As clips ahead of the release have shown, locations such as the Leshan Giant Buddha in Sichuan and the towers of Pudong have been painstakingly recreated so that you feel like you’re literally there.

But like How To Train Your Dragon before it, this movie isn’t just about what’s on the surface.

While making their way to the Himalayas Yi, Jin, Peng and Everest discover the importance of family and their own friendship as they stick together against the most difficult of odds.

One of the undercurrents of Abominable that parents will appreciate is how it manages to open up discussions around the need for environmental protection, when creatures like Everest face losing their homes because of human greed.

With a diverse and talented voice cast that includes both Asian and Caucasian actors and a witty script, Abominable is the one movie not to be missed these school holidays.

Abominable will open in cinemas Australia-wide Thursday, September 19.
