The 5 micro-habits you didn’t know were sabotaging your mornings (and how to fix them).

I wake up with the best intentions. I want to be calm, productive and maybe even a little smug about knocking off the to-do list before lunchtime.

But then the minutes tick by and all I've done is snooze my alarm twice, scroll Instagram, ingest my daily dose of caffeine and realise (too late) that I forgot breakfast again. There goes another $15.

We can all relate to that feeling of the morning slipping away without really getting to sink your teeth into it.

But, it turns out, a massive overhaul was not needed.

I wasn't entirely misplaced; it was just a series of micro-habits I'd adopted over time — invisible behaviours I'd been overlooking — setting me back.

At first, they seemed harmless: checking my phone, skipping water, leaning too hard on caffeine. But once I started tweaking them, I noticed a major shift.

So, without further ado, here are the five sneaky micro-habits that might be sabotaging your mornings — and the small fixes that can make a big difference.

1. Skipping hydration (or waiting too long to drink it).

Let's be honest: many of us reach for coffee before we've properly pried our eyes open. But after seven-plus hours of no fluids, your body is craving hydration (not caffeine) first thing in the morning.

I used to down a coffee first thing as my treat for getting up, but it left me feeling jittery, thirsty and often crashing mid-morning. Even going decaf didn't seem to improve my mood.

Enter: Posca Hydrate. These drinks have been a real game-changer for me.

They're sparkling (which makes them more fun than plain water), sugar-free and packed with good stuff like electrolytes and prebiotics, meaning they actually support your gut and hydration from the get-go.

Perfect if you're not keen on just chugging boring water first thing.

What surprised me most? I felt the difference before I'd even finished the can. It gave me a boost with no caffeine crash in sight. It tastes great and, honestly, it feels like it's doing something. A small switch that actually makes a difference.

2. Reaching for your phone the moment you wake up.

Okay, I work in the media, so the news is my life. But I would tell myself that 'checking the news' or 'checking the weather' was a worthwhile pursuit, while actually ending up in a doom-scroll that squished my 'getting ready time' and made me stressed.

Not exactly a peaceful way to start the day.

The fix? Delay your scroll. Even 10 minutes of phone-free time in the morning can help you feel more present and less reactive. For me, keeping my phone out of reach has been a major win, so the first thing I do in the morning is open my blind and get my bearings before the day's drama is upon me.

3. Going from zero to inbox in 60 seconds.

In the same vein, I used to pride myself on being 'on' in the mornings. Breaking news? No worries. Slack messages? Consider them replied to.

However, no workplace should actually require you to be a productivity robot at 5am, and having healthy boundaries between work and play is essential.

So, I suggest giving yourself the gift of a morning work buffer.

You must have 15 minutes after waking up before logging on to your communication apps. From there, you can reply to the most urgent in a 10-minute window before logging off and going about your morning.

You'll feel like you're still on top of things without spending all morning going back and forth on things that should get started when the work day actually starts.

4. Caffeine before food.

I have learnt to drink decaf drinks over the years, but the biggest morning no-no for the rest of the population is downing a coffee before there's anything in your stomach.

It might be a painful realisation, but it's just setting you up for energy crashes and sometimes even nausea.

So, I recommend starting the day with a slice of toast, protein yoghurt or a banana before sipping on anything caffeinated (that includes tea people!).

5. Diving straight into decision-making.

Mornings are full of micro-decisions: what to wear, what to eat, what to do first. It sounds small, but decision fatigue can start before you've even left the house — especially if you're already tired or stressed.

One easy fix? Automate whatever you can. Set out your clothes the night before. Rotate through the same two or three breakfasts. Have a default plan for your first work task of the day. The less mental energy you spend early on, the more you have for the stuff that actually matters later.

The bottom line: You don't need a 5am wake-up or a bulletproof 12-step routine to have better mornings. Often, it's about noticing the tiny things you do on autopilot — and gently tweaking them to work for you, not against you.

From there, each small step built on the next and all of a sudden mornings were… kind of good?
