Two-piece gowns and "earthy" vibes: The 9 biggest wedding trends for 2020.

Summer in Australia means we’re full-swing into wedding season, and your Insta feed’s probably overflowing with rustic couple photos and native bouquets right now – we know.

If it all feels so 2019, allow us to provide some insight into the dresses, decor and other details that are going to be trending next year. Early-adopters and 2020 brides, take note.

Bridal trends for 2020.

Two piece gowns.

Thanks to influencer Steph Claire Smith (now Stephanie Miller), we’re going to see the rise of the two-piece dress. This trend allows brides to have a bit of fun with convention, they can either go for matching sets like Steph’s or mix up the top and bottom. It also allows for the ultimate quick-change from ceremony to reception – just add silky white trousers or a sparkly skirt for the after party.

Miller changed into a slinky satin dress for hers, which also showed off her toned mid-section. We’re not saying it’s a timeless trend – but here’s to looking back in 40 years and being able to say, “Yep, I went there.”

Off-the-shoulder styles.

A romantic style if we’ve ever seen one, the sweeping off-shoulder gown is the new take on the strapless dress, and imbues some bohemian charm for the big day. Fashion-forward celebs including Heidi Klum and Millie Mackintosh wore versions of the look for their recent weddings.

Satin dresses.

Frothy, voluminous dresses will always have a place, but there’s been a recent shift to more minimal styles and stripped-back glamour. Pinterest has seen a 332 per cent increase in searches for satin fitted wedding dresses, which might have something to do with Hailey Bieber, who wore a Vera Wang sheath (with sneakers) for her reception when she married Justin Bieber in October. Too cool.

Pearl accents.

From accessories to gowns, pearls are having a major moment that’s only going to continue into 2020. When it comes to jewellery, it’s all about imperfect pearls that lend an earthier but still polished vibe, like drop-earrings with molten gold and asymmetrical stones. For the main event, expect to see dresses and veils studded with tiny pearls – a new take on embellishment that sees the Swarovski crystal take a backseat.

Personalisation.

When Hailey Baldwin married Justin Bieber in a lace gown by Off White back in October, you couldn’t miss the detail sewn into the back of her train: a message reading “till death do us part”. Although the internet registered the statement as vaguely ominous, the decision to personalise her dress is one we’re going to see more brides opt for in 2020.

Unique engagement rings.

2020 will be the year of the non-traditional wedding ring. Thanks to an increase in small boutique designers popping up on Instagram, and more accessibility to a variety of designs at competitive rates, brides are opting for original stones and settings that speak to their personality – rather than the trends. Pinterest has seen search increase for lavender sapphire engagement rings and turquoise stones. And while the classic cushion cut is still kicking, there’s a surge in popularity for different shapes like the Marquise and Sunburst.

Decor trends for 2020.

Earthy tones.

In 2019, it was all about muted pastels. Next year, colour schemes based around earthy shades will take over. According to Pinterest, searches for burnt orange are up a whopping 2948 per cent, and terracotta follows behind at 1276 per cent.

Geometric details.

While rustic themes will always be on-trend, a super modern way to cut through the bucolic aesthetic is with striking geometric accents (just think of the wedding photos.) Round, square and hexagonal wedding “arches” and sculptural centrepieces are trending into next year.

Sustainability.

More than ever, Millennials and Gen Z are interested in having eco-conscious weddings. Searches for ‘sustainable wedding ideas’ have spiked in 2019, with many couples turning to low-key backyard weddings, DIY decorations that save on plastic and clutter, and smaller, more intimate ceremonies surrounded by nature.
